Development of Zinc-Particle Fuel Cell and Li-ion Battery in Hybrid Electric Energy System

Development of Zinc-Particle Fuel Cell and Li-ion Battery in Hybrid Electric Energy System
In order to improve the endurance of electric vehicle and to decrease the inconvenience of charging, in this research, zinc-particle fuel cell and Li-ion battery were first applied to electric vehicle platforms for developing the technology of light electric vehicle. Li-ion battery was used as an active power source while using zinc-particle fuel cell as the auxiliary power source. Moreover, this research used the power platform of multi-electric sources to examine the performance. The Li-ion battery, zinc-particle fuel cell and magnetic powder brake on the experimental platform were controlled by the LabVIEW program to pick up signals and output commands.
It simulated the driving situation in different loads, including low, middle, and high loads. Driving in low load, is set as driving in the crowded market, driving in middle load is just like driving on the pedestrian way, and driving in high load is similar to drive up to the hill. In order to get the best power result, the study compared and calculated the performance output of the pure electric vehicle and the hybrid electric vehicle under the same power.
In this study, the air electrode of “KFN Technology Corp.” was selected as having the best efficiency by single cell test. The results showed that the maximum current density was 360 mA/cm2 while the maximum energy density was 245 mW/cm2. Moreover, the maximum current density is 186 mA/cm2 whille the maximum energy density is 325 mW/cm2. Under three different driving conditions, the proportion of current output of lithium battery reduced by zinc fuel cell were 56%, 30% and 19.3% respectively.
